actively defended the indefensible; abhorrent; false patina of legality; depravity; sadistic;
blinkered apologists; fabricating a legal foundation; shopped around for the answer they wanted; vast criminal conspiracy, under color of law; not made in good faith; Republicans who have gone hoarse braying; rationalize and conceal
Here's an excerpt in complete sentences:

multiple times that “we need to look forward as opposed to looking
backwards,” as though the two were incompatible. They are not.
